Welcome to the 12 DIYs of Christmas! Today is the 11th December which means I am sharing my 11th Christmas DIY with you.
Christmas can be a seriously expensive time of year and so I will be sharing DIY Christmas gift ideas as well as some thrifty decor ideas to help you to stay on budget this December.
On the 11th DIY of Christmas Thrifty Londoner sent to me…
A HANDMADE CHRISTMAS WREATH
This year I am loving simple handmade Christmas wreaths, decorated thriftily with materials that can already be found around the home.
On the Christmas wreath in the photo I have used a wicker wreath that I bought for a dollar in Dollar Tree in the US when I was there in September (I like planning for Christmas early!). Using a wicker wreath like this means that you can just slide in any sprigs easily and then reuse the wicker wreath once the Christmas season is over. I’m hoping I’ll be able to use this for Easter too when that comes around in the Spring.
For the decoration itself, I have used some gold ribbon which I had saved from some packaging, plus a bird decoration on wire which I found in a charity shop, the mushroom decorations which you may remember from my wrapping paper DIY, and finally some sprigs of spruce which I cut from our Christmas tree.
I would have loved to add some more cuttings, but since we live in London and don’t have a garden, it is a little difficult to get cuttings. Does anyone know whether you are allowed to take small cuttings from trees in parks? I have been wondering about this all month, but stuck to sprigs from our own Christmas tree to spare myself any potential embarrassment!
You could go all out with this kind of wicker wreath as a base, and really build up the cuttings all the way around the ring to make it really lush and full. My personal favourites are holly, berries, eucalyptus, and even dried citrus fruits to bring a Christmassy scent to the wreath.
